You can spend a lot of time waiting to feel ready. Ready to start strength training. Ready to try something new. Ready to make a change you’ve been thinking about for years.
One of my favorite takeaways from my conversation with Kate Lanagan MacGregor was her approach to moving forward: “Do your next right thing.”
You don’t have to know where every step will lead to take the one in front of you.
Kate, co-owner of Bold Real Estate, joined me as the first guest on A Well Lived Life. We go back to our days teaching step aerobics, so we’ve shared a love of movement for decades. But this conversation reached beyond fitness. We talked about caring for ourselves, navigating uncertainty, and continuing to create a life we want to live.
Taking a step when life changes
Kate started her real estate company during a difficult time. Her father had been diagnosed with cancer, and she wanted more flexibility to be there for her family.
She wasn’t mapping out the next 20 years of her business. She was responding to what mattered in her life at that moment and seeing an opportunity to serve people differently.
When someone described her decision as a bold move, the name stuck.
That story stayed with me because sometimes we put so much pressure on a change. We think we need a detailed plan and confidence that it will all work out.
Maybe you’re considering a new direction in your work. Maybe you want to feel stronger but feel uncomfortable walking into a gym. Your next step might be one conversation, one class, or asking someone for help.
You can begin there.
Building strength into everyday life
Kate’s approach to movement is creative and personal. She loves being outdoors and has found ways to turn her surroundings into opportunities to move, from walking lunges along a beach path to using logs and rocks in her workouts.
She also has a “thinking rock” where she sits quietly in nature.
I loved that combination. There is room for effort and stillness. For building strength and giving yourself a moment to think.
You don’t have to follow Kate into the woods to take something from her approach. Start by noticing what you enjoy and what is available to you. A walk outside. A few minutes of strength work at home. A quiet moment before you reach for your phone.
Those are all ways to make room for your well-being within the day you already have.
Deciding how you want to age
Kate’s father, now 90, has given her a powerful example of staying active. She described him doing countertop push-ups, squats, and lunges around his kitchen.
Movement had a place in his everyday life.
That brought our conversation back to something I care deeply about: building the strength to keep participating in your life.
For you, that might mean carrying your own suitcase, getting down on the floor with grandchildren, or feeling confident trying something new.
We can’t control everything about aging. We can choose habits that support how we want to live.
Making room for what comes next
Kate also shared a conversation with a friend who was pursuing law school later in life. The years would pass either way. Why not spend them working toward something she wanted?
Maybe there’s something you’ve quietly set aside because you think you should have started sooner.
You’re allowed to revisit it. You’re allowed to invest time in your health, learn something new, and make plans that excite you.
That’s part of what I’m exploring through A Well Lived Life, too. I’m learning as I go, and taking you along with me.
I hope this conversation helps you choose one next step of your own.
